For Colorado Soils & Climates
What is compost?
Let's get technical
Compost is a product made through the controlled aerobic decomposition of biodegradable materials. Through mesophilic and thermophilic phases, composting reduces harmful pathogens and weed seeds, stabilizing the organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.
Timberline follows the definition set by the U.S. Composting Council (USCC) and the American Association of Plant and Food Control Officials (AAPFCO).
We are proud to be:
- A member of the U.S. Composting Council
- Colorado Proud, supporting local agriculture and sustainability

Composting Basics
How it works:
- Aerobic decomposition (oxygen-rich) is ideal: reduces odor, speeds breakdown
- Correct C:N ratio (20–30:1) helps microbes thrive
- Thermal activity generated by microbes kills pathogens and weed seeds
What We Recycle
- Tree & Grass Clippings
- Leaves
- Untreated Pallets
- Livestock Manure
- Garden Waste
Compost Conditions
- Moisture:
- 40–50% optimal
- <30% = fire risk,
- >60% = odor
- Bulk density:
- Target 30–40 lbs per 5-gallon bucket
- Oxygen:
- Microbes consume all available O2 in 30 minutes
- Temperature:
- Maintained above 131 degrees during active phase of composting
