Hello, my name is Jonathan with Timberline Rock N’ Roll, and today I’m going to explain how the green waste we receive is turned into high-quality compost.
We accept green waste from local residents as well as landscape contractors who clean up properties throughout the community. Once the material arrives at our facility, it’s piled together and ground into pieces about two inches in size. After grinding, we add moisture and build the material into large compost piles. We carefully manage the pile’s density so it has enough airflow to support the composting process.
Once the moisture levels are right, the biology does the work. As microorganisms break down the organic material, the piles naturally heat up, often reaching temperatures above 160 degrees. These high temperatures help eliminate weed seeds and harmful pathogens. The compost remains in this active process for about 67 days, during which we turn the piles five times to ensure all the material is evenly composted.
After the compost has fully matured, it’s screened to a half-inch size, creating a light, fluffy finished product. Green waste compost is especially beneficial for Colorado’s sandy, clay-like soils because it improves soil structure, increases airflow, and helps the soil retain more moisture.
